Dr. Oz

this is really interesting. i am watching this right now. i recommend you all watch it because it kind of goes beyond the scope of what you normally see on a tv segment on adderall abuse. Dr. Oz does a diagram of what happens to your brain when you take adderall and normal dopamine production is "arrested"

One of the guests said if heroin and oxycontin are a 10 on the addictive scale, ritalin and adderall are a 7 or 8...

Ashley you seem to be a great source for finding out where and how this stuff is covered on the media - thanks! Watching now.

Edit: Just watched it - I dunno but this is a HUGE trigger for me and I couldn't help feeling like it was just an ad for how to create excuses to go to the doc with "symptoms" and get a prescription. That's how it all started with me. They needed to hear first hand experience from someone like me (or any one of us on this site) about the downside, to balance out the story fully. The only person I thought gave a really great case for it was the celebrity fitness trainer (can't remember her name).

Yes, Heather the episode I saw was the young guy whose parents begged the doctors to stop prescribing him to no avail, because he was delusional and exhibited all the signs of adderall psychosis and ended up committing suicide. It was heart-wrenching, and I kept thinking....that could've been me. I think this story has been talked about on the site.

I probbably should not post this comment because I am ignorant of Dr. Oz and I have never watched even one of his shows. I heard that he is NOT a real doctor. It seems like he promotes these wierd fad drugs and supplements (i.e. rasberry ketones). I am skeptical that he has a vested interest in some of the stuff he promotes. Is it possible that this epispode was covertly influenced by a drug salesman from Adderall. Inc?

Dang, adderall is blowin' up all over the place. I think we should start a poll and all guess how much longer before they take it off the shelves. Anyone care to go first?

I really liked this opinion article I read in the huffington post...he likens adderall abuse to an ice age that is beginning to melt with the media attention, especially with the NY times..one can only hope...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-diller/richard-fee-adderall_b_2612410.html

He also touches on the role of drug companies and marketing ADHD which I find very interesting. I googled it and there is a ton of info..

He's a heart surgeon who went to Harvard undergrad and and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. I don't think that sounds like the case to me, but I don't know, quit-once. He was pretty adamant against, not adderall, but adderall being prescribed to people without ADHD, and the huge rise in prescriptions being written. He brought on a specialist who's spent like 30 years studying ADHD, and covered all the bases on how dangerous this can be when people are being prescribed without actually having ADHD....and of course abuse. Doesn't sound like an adderall advocate to me, but I only saw that one episode.

I am watching this now...

it's crazy. he wanted help. they tried to put him in rehab, the beds were full, so they were told to admit him to the ER, they did that..the ER referred him to outpatient care and to see a special psychiatrist the next day...he goes to the psychiatrist with his mom and walks out with another prescription for adderalll!! And the whole reason they were there was to get help for adderall addiction.

He's a real doctor but his show is mostly pseudoscience/supplement fads because 'the magic supplement show' is what yields ratings, plus they shoot 5 shows a week so the topics are going to be a stretch when they're pressed to come up with new material everyday. There's a good article in Slate called Dr. Oz's miraculous medical advice' that talks about his quakery, or 'woo' as it's called in the scientific community.

Interesting...i just got raspberry ketones in they mail. A sample package of them from GNC that came with my Mega Men energy and metabolism multivitamins. What are these?

Anyway, Dr. Oz has written a diet book in the past, but it wasn't a fad diet, like drink water with maple syrup every day and lose 100 pounds. It was more like a general common sense healthy diet, called YOU: On a Diet.

But of course, you know, these daytime shows are all driven by ratings and people seem to tune into SUPER SECRETS TO SLIMMING DOWN blah blah...I bet there is pressure to do more of that. Personally, that is first time I've seen the Dr. Oz show, so i am no expert on what he covers and doesn't cover..

Ok so I watched the updated link (ie show) and I agree, it's a much different message than the first video I watched. What a terrible story. And so possible for so many people, all it takes is a loss of control. I've never watched Dr Oz before this so I don't know how genuine he is, but he seemed honestly very concerned.

After watching Dr. Oz, my brother thought rasberry keytones would be the miracle pill to help him loose weight. But he said they dropped his blood pressure and made him dizzy - so he kindly gave 'em to his little brother. So I tried them. They made me feel hot. They made me feel like I was going to pass out if I got up too quick or ran up the stairs. And they gave me heart palpitations worse than adderall ever did. So, I trashed them.

I just tried the mega men vitamins and I kinda liked them.
