Went back on Adderall and quit cold turkey… again.

I hate to admit this but after 7.5 years stim free and due to having to work from home because of the pandemic i convinced myself to get back on Adderall. It started out great and it brought back those first time feelings focus and energy. Fast forward 6 months and I felt like shit so I quit cold turkey again. It’s been one month and similar to my last quitting experience I am getting hit with the withdrawal side effects a month later. Insomnia, I feel week, shaky, anxiety is coming back, it’s hell. I remember when I quit the first time that it took a year to start to feel normal again. Anyone have any tips on how to deal with brain zaps snd tremors from what I think is withdrawal? I need to get in with my GP as well but any advice or feedback would be appreciated. Did you experience withdrawal like this?

@jnolanmartin, Oh dear I'm so sorry you have to go through this again. I took Adderall for years and I quit and started back up several times. This time was January 16th. It's been hard. I still suffer from insomnia but it's getting further between. But the lack of motivation and drive is making me crazy!!!! I try ever supplement on the market. I usually end up getting my money back because nothing works. I think it is just going to take a long long time. A good year wouldn't surprise me. I woke up early this morning because if I get plenty of sleep I feel pretty good if it would only last all day. Today is even day six since I stopped vaping that has been a challenge also but I'm determined to do it. Stupid vaping just drags me down even further. Don't give up It will get better. That's what I tell myself everyday lol. I wished I had never met Adderall. Take care of yourself and do not give up. Most all of you are way younger than I am because I'm 61 and I've been abusing myself for many years so don't like that long keep going

@Teresa Thank you for this. This forum and everyone on it is a godsend. Withdrawal has presented itself in a strange way both times I have quit and it wasn’t immediately noticeable for me. Took about a month or more! Insomnia, random tremors, vertigo, brain zaps. Im an otherwise healthy guy so it creates a bit of anxiety which sucks because a byproduct of my ADHD is anxiety if I am stuck working at my desk job.
Great job on your progress! I can’t wait to get there but also want to try and give my body and brain then grace it needs to recover. I really hate adderall in all it’s forms.
Great work on quitting vaping! I know that is a hard one too. Sending good vibes your way on your journey.

Nice job getting off again!  It’s not for the faint of heart. I had to go on Paxil to help me get through it.. low dose 10 mg but it takes the edge off.  The insomnia sucks, along with the weird body sensations and extreme anxiety and irrational thoughts.  You will get through it. 8 months for me and although every day is hard at least I can sleep at night and I have great blood pressure now. I had border line high blood pressure with addy I think it slowly kills you.

Thank you I appreciate you! It’s been brutal to say the least. But it’s getting a tiny bit better everyday. Congratulations on 8 months!! Thats so good. I remember it was still hard then - hell, it was hard at 7 years addy free especially with the current state of the world. My lesson this time is to try and not let external circumstances sway my vigilance. Hope you are feeling better and better.

Hey there! So I also struggled even at my 1 year mark of sobriety after heavy addy use for 8 years. I think once you have felt that dopamine high you always want it and we constantly search for a replacement.
I found new ways to cope that mostly included diet and exercise and a single cup of bulletproof coffee in the morning.
I know there are varying opinions but I still think ADHD/ADD is for real. I get horrible anxiety if I sit too long and it impacts my whole day. I can’t even take a plane ride unless I run for an hour+ before I board lol. With that anxiety comes fatigue and depression and brain fog and it’s a vicious cycle. For me I have to move. Activity is king.

So.. From my experience, it WILL get better and you will level out. It took some time like 2 years for me. And I’m sad to think that Ive started back at square one. But stay the course and lots of self care. Good diet, exercise and move, good sleep! Meditation. Vitamin D3 and B vitamins. Don’t get discouraged. You got this!
